Using the German example, the seminar provides an overview on how national identity is constituted and how historical memory may influence our understanding of contemporary events and developments. An excursion to Bergen-Belsen memorial will provide an opportunity to explore memorial culture in practice. Students are encouraged to link seminar contents to questions from their own field of study.
